I tried to find previous reviews of this product before buying it. Ekman's research, along with this CD, has been praised in a few magazine features, but I couldn't find a critical appraisal of this training program itself. As a fan of Ekman's research, I went ahead and purchased the CD, and I have to say that it's one of the most disappointing purchases I've made in a long time.
The company praises the training program's brevity - learn to recognize subtle and brief emotional expressions in 2 training programs that can be completed in under an hour. Yeah, well the under-an-hour thing ends up being more a criticism than a high point, as the actual quality of information here, along with its lack of depth, is quite disappointing.
The information in each training program is equivalent to that of a 15-minute power-point presentation. Each program consists of a 'learning' section, followed by a 'practice' section. The learning section for the subtle emotions portion has a module for each of the seven universal emotions. Each module then has two to ten slides, each slide with one photo and about a sentence (often less than a sentence) of information about the emotion at hand. The microexpression learning is a bit more interesting, but it's still quite shallow: It consists of eight little 2-minute talks that distinguish various emotions from one another, and under the voiceover, there are two pictures of faces that simultaneously morph from a neutral expression to an emotive one.
Then, you have the practice sections. These have pictures of neutral faces that last for a few seconds, and then quickly flash to an emotive face and, in under half a second, jump back to the neutral face. You're asked to choose the emotion that the expression represents, then you're told whether you're right or wrong (and given the correct answer if you're wrong).
I've no doubt that a ton of research went into creating this CD, and that it can improve your emotion-recognizing abilities. However, the practice sections are embarrassingly dissimilar to anything you'd encounter in the real world. First of all, you're specifically starring at a picture, waiting for it to quickly flash an emotion; then, even though the flash was quick, you're given as much time as you want to choose an emotion. No where do these tests incorporate actual videos of people's facial expressions, which would correspond more to what you actually see in the real world. They're just flashing pictures, over and over and over again.
Moreover, there is absolutely no discussion of the training program's applicability to the real world. For instance, we're told that these seven emotions are the accepted 'universal' emotions across all people in the world - but there's no discussion as to whether they can combine with each other, or how they're affected by 'social emotions', which vary across cultures. We're not told whether we should look for some emotions more than others. And we're not even giving any general principles of things to watch for, it's just unrelated facts, and not even that many facts at that.
The repetitiveness of the practice sections is not only grating, but it also a sketchy way to learn a topic. It's the equivilant of learning math by taking an algebra test over and over again, each time with slightly different problems. Sure you might eventually get all of the problems correct - and in the process you might learn a thing or two about algebra - but it's not a lasting and qualitative way to teach a subject.
In all fairness, I'm sure that being able to pass the program's practice tests is certainly a good start to recognizing emotions. Moreover, I did learn a few interesting things: for instance, disgust is all in the nose; and the difference between contempt and happiness is in an expression's asymmetry. However, the CD did not really satiate my curiosity. I understand that Ekman has an excellent book for this, but I was hoping that the CD could use multimedia to further elucidate the material. And this CD falls quite short of such a goal.
